Who is Energy Safety?
Energy Safety is part of WorkSafe New Zealand. We are responsible for monitoring, encouraging and enforcing compliance with the laws related to electricity and gas supply.
Previously we were part of the Ministry of Economic Development and later Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Energy Safety is the government agency responsible for providing an effective investigation, compliance, enforcement, and conformance regime for achieving electrical and gas safety outcomes.

Energy Safety will continue to develop and implement a compliance and enforcement strategy based on known risk areas and current statistical data to support the Regulations with a view to influencing safe outcomes from the distribution and use of electricity and gas.
We will conduct audits of electricity and gas suppliers, networks, distribution systems, installations, and appliances, and actively target non-compliance to facilitate public safety outcomes.
