Gas Appliance Regime Overview

The following is an outline of the regime introduced to ensure that gas appliances and fittings are safe to use. These procedures became mandatory on 18 November 2002 through an amendment to the Gas Regulations 1993.

An explanation of the full regime, Safety Obligations: Gas Appliances and Fittings, is available on this website.

Suppliers are:

  • Required to complete a Supplier Declaration that is fully supported by documentation and able to demonstrate compliance, for all gas appliances,* to be posted on this website before supply commences
  • Required to familiarise themselves with the full details of the regime

Retailers and Gasfitters are:

  • Required to ensure that appliances supplied after 18 November 2002 by an appliance manufacturer or importer are supported by a Supplier Declaration, before on-selling or installing the appliance
  • Expected to advise Energy Safety of any appliance that is not supported by a Supplier Declaration

Consumers should note:

  • You can confirm that any appliance or specified fitting you plan to purchase has been declared on this website
  • Please advise Energy Safety of any appliance or specified fitting that is not supported by a Supplier Declaration

*The supplier declaration requirements may be extended in the future to encompass "Specified fittings", which will be defined through a schedule to be included on this website. The schedule may align with the range of materials and components requiring approval in Australia, i.e. automatic shut-off valves, hose assemblies, limited flexibility connectors, flue cowls, jointing compounds and materials, manual shut-off valves, quick connect devices, and vent valves.

Business notes on the regime, Changes to the Gas Appliance Safety Regime, are also available.
