The Energy Safety Service is responsible for the safety, supply quality and measurement in electricity, gas and petrol / diesel fuels. It combines the former Offices of the Chief Electrical and Chief Gas Engineers into one group.

On 10 July 2000, the Associate Minister of Energy approved the New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice for Electrical Safety of Fittings and Electrical Appliances 2000 (ECP 3:2000).
