General Essential Safety - Electrical Product Safety Obligations
All Electrical and Electronic Products sold in NZ are required to be safe.
Compliance with NZS (or AS/NZS) Standards, is necessary for a product to be recognised as being safe. Alternatively, where due to innovation or the introduction of alternative materials, products cannot comply with the applicable Standards, such products may be certified as complying with AS/NZS 3820 (Essential safety requirements for low voltage electrical equipment).
A list of the Recognised Standards is provided on this website.
Notes:
Certain Products require an Approval and/or a Supplier Declaration of Compliance (SDoC) before being offered for sale.
Applicable Regulations (General product Safety)
The principal Regulations relating to the General Safety requirements are Regulations 69 and 76 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.
