Proposed Electricity Regulations

In 1996 the implementation of a review of the Electricity Safety legislative regime began with the passing by Government of amendments to the Electricity Act 1992. We are now completing the review by the preparation of amendments to the Electricity Regulations 1997 which will then allow the changes to the Act to be brought into effect.

In parallel with the amendments needed to implement the changes to the Act, the opportunity has been taken to also generally update the Regulations as they apply to installations and electrical equipment.

The current Electricity Regulations 1997 are proposed to be repealed and replaced with new Electricity (Safety) Regulations.

Given the technical nature of the proposed regulations an exposure draft of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations has been released by the Minister to members of the industry. A commentary to the proposed regulations has been prepared by Energy Safety to guide industry through the key aspects of the proposed regulations.

The exposure draft process provides an opportunity for members of the electricity industry to comment on the technical nature of the regulations and to suggest improvements for their workability.

Schedule 2 has now been updated (the Official Standards) [21 kB PDF].

Schedule 4 (the Standards applicable to fittings and fixtures) are presently being updated with assistance from Standards New Zealand.

Any comments and suggestions on the regulations should be sent by 29 September 2009 to Energy Safety, Ministry of Economic Development, 33 Bowen Street, PO Box 1473, Wellington.
