Short Description
The following extracts from the Electricity Act 1992 and Electricity Regulations 1997 are applicable to domestic electrical installations that are owned and occupied by the owner.

Because of the introduction of AS/NZS 3000 which was empowered by Electricity Amendment Regulations 2002 and came into force on 1 January 2003, all new electrical installations from 1 January 2003 are required to have residual current devices (RCDs) fitted on the main switchboard for all lighting and socket-outlets final subcircuits.
The requirement also requires any new socket-outlet subcircuit installed in an existing electrical installation to be RCD-protected. This RCD can either be mounted on the main switchboard or one that forms part of the socket-outlet. If it is a socket-outlet type, the RCD must be fitted on the first socket-outlet on the new subcircuit. These requirements must now be applied to ECP 51.
