The Approval Application Process
All electrical appliances in New Zealand must be safe. In addition to this, certain products - Declared Articles - must be approved for sale in New Zealand.
Energy Safety approval (or recognised certification) is required for a specific list of electrical appliances before these appliances can be legally sold in New Zealand.
The full list of electrical appliances covered by the revised Electrical Appliance Safety Regime is available. Click on the link to the name of the appliance to see:
- The appliance's date of implementation to the supplier declaration or declared article list (either 1 March 2002 or 1 September 2002)
- Whether the appliance requires a supplier declaration (SD) or an approval (AP)
- The appliance's technical description
- The appliance's class/Standard

Please note: In order to have a declared article considered for approval, you must fully complete and submit the approval application form, accompanied by the prescribed fee of $400 (GST inclusive), to Energy Safety.
