Earthworks and Digging
[ Last Updated 31 May 2006 ]
Gas pipes are generally located underground. Although an advantage when it comes to appearance of a property, it means that there are significant hidden dangers when you excavate.
Always locate gas pipes before digging. If you are not sure exactly where your supply pipes are, before you start any excavations, check with your local gas company who will quickly locate and mark the position of the pipes. If there are other underground services such as electricity or water you should also check with the appropriate utility company.
When digging post holes, or driving stakes or standards, be careful: pipes are not necessarily laid in a straight line and depths can vary in different situations. They are not designed to withstand a blow from a tool, or any other object.
If a pipe becomes damaged or you suspect damage, contact your local gas company immediately.
