Safety Campaign for Gas Consumers in Progress - Media Statement
[ Last Updated 9 March 2006 ]
This year, the Energy Safety Service of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs is running a gas safety campaign in conjunction with the LPG Association of New Zealand (Inc), the Gas Association of New Zealand and the New Zealand Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.
Used safely, gas is a great fuel - instant and efficient. However, like any form of energy, it needs to be treated with respect to prevent accidents. The aim of the campaign is to prevent gas accidents and to create a safer environment for gas consumers by raising awareness of gas safety and highlighting potential dangers.
As part of the campaign, a pamphlet, 'Keeping Safe with Gas', has been printed. These pamphlets are being distributed to retail gas companies (for inclusion with customer power bills), appliance stores, community groups such as Citizens Advice Bureaux and libraries, and many other organisations with an interest in gas safety.
The main messages of the gas safety pamphlet are:- Install your gas appliances safety.
- Make sure that all appliances and installations are maintained regularly.
- Ensure that you have adequate ventilation when using your appliance.
The pamphlet also tells you what you should do if you have a problem with your gas appliances or installation.
Swing tags with safety messages for LPG cabinet heaters have also been produced. These have been distributed to service stations around the country and will be attached to LPG cylinders when they are filled.
The timing of the distribution of these swing tags is important. LPG cabinet heaters are a popular and efficient appliance for providing warmth in autumn and winter. But sadly, each year a number of New Zealanders are hurt and sometimes lose their homes in accidents caused by the unsafe use or inadequate maintenance of these heaters. The swing tags provide information on safe practices for the use and maintenance of LPG cabinet heaters.
