Sleep Easy with your Electric Blanket - Media Statement

The nights are getting longer and colder. Soon you’ll be bringing out that electric blanket to keep you warm at night. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ Energy Safety Service warns that there are risks associated with using electric blankets. For example, a recent house fire in Wellington was caused by a short circuit in an electric blanket.

There are some simple steps that you can take to stay safe when using electric blankets.

Checking and Maintenance

Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If your blanket has been stored for the summer months, check it for any signs of damage. Examine the power cord, control switch and plug. None of the power cord's internal wires should be visible. If the sheath of the power cord has come away from the plug or control switch, or it has been damaged, have it repaired immediately. Examine the blanket for damage or scorch marks and feel for any creases, loops or sharp edges in the heating element. If you have any doubts, have your electric blanket checked by a licensed electrical worker before using it. Never try to make any repairs to the blanket yourself.

Fitting

When fitting it, spread the blanket evenly over the bed, so that it is smooth and flat. Never use a blanket on a bed that is too small. Fix it securely to the mattress using the attached tapes. Never use pins or other sharp objects to secure your electric blanket. The power cord and control switch must be kept outside the bed to avoid any strain or twisting.

Using Your Electric Blanket

When you use your blanket for the first time, turn it to the highest setting for 15 minutes, then turn it off and check to see if any areas are over-heating. Don't leave it unattended while you are doing this and turn it off immediately if there are any problems.

  • Never use an electric blanket that is wet.
  • Don’t place a hot water bottle in bed with the electric blanket in use.
  • Clothing or other items should not be left piled on the bed while the blanket is switched on as this could cause localised over-heating.
  • Never leave a baby, a sick or infirm person or anyone who may be insensitive to heat alone in the bed while the blanket is on.
  • Make sure that you switch off the blanket when it is not in use.

Storage

Store your electric blanket in its original carton avoiding sharp folds and creasing. It is important that it is not stored where weight or pressure from other items could cause damage.

Follow the above simple steps and sleep easy this winter.
