Hazardous Areas

Q. What Standards Should I Refer to if Wishing to Carry Out Electrical Work or Select Equipment for a Hazardous Area?

A. The performance-based regulatory environment allows the use of alternative solutions and, consequently, it is recommended that electrical work in hazardous areas is now carried out in accordance with AS/NZS 2381.1 and the Standards that that Standard cites, including the AS/NZS 2380 series for electrical equipment. The repair and overhaul of electrical equipment for hazardous areas should be carried out in accordance with AS/NZS 3800. Competency standards are now also available for all who perform work in a hazardous area. These competencies are contained in AS/NZS 4761. These standards are aligned with international guidelines.

Q. Who is Responsible for Ensuring the Safety of Maintenance Work Carried Out on Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Locations?

A. The owner or operator of the installation or equipment.

Q. Can the US/European/Japanese Standards be Applied in Respect of Hazardous Locations?

A. The recognition of Standards for equipment used in hazardous areas is detailed in AS/NZS 2381.1.
