Applying for an Approval
[ Last Updated 26 June 2007 ]
An approval, valid for a maximum period of five years, is issued in the form of a certificate that can be obtained from Energy Safety, Ministry of Economic Development.
To obtain an approval from the MED it is necessary to:
- submit an application on the Applicance Approval Form
- pay the prescribed fee (currently $400, including GST)
- submit technical documentation in English in support of the application. This will normally be in the form of test reports, from a recognised testing facility, showing full compliance with the applicable standard, and must cover the plug and flexible cord that is used to connect the appliance to the supply mains. The test reports must be less than 5 years old, however supporting test reports over a 12 months old will reduce the validity period of the approval pro rata, so that the approval period granted for a product supported by test report that is 2 years old will be a maximum of 3 years (i.e. 5 years minus the age of the supporting test report)
- if necessary, submit photographs and/or a sample of the product for which approval is needed
Approvals are not required for products that have a recognised certification.
