Compliance with Regulation 56

Standards Solutions to Ensure Compliance with Regulation 56

There are no offence provisions relating to the sale of equipment that does not comply with Regulation 56, since this regulation relates to the use of equipment. However, the implications of selling equipment that would cause an offence when it is used should be considered by the importer and manufacturer.

IEC 61000-3-2, IEC 61000-3-4 and IEC 61000-3-12 (selected according to the rated current of the equipment) or their regional or local equivalents or ECP 36 contain acceptable solutions to show compliance with Regulation 56 in respect of interference from harmonics.

If ECP 36 is applied, this simply requires that the phase-to-earth harmonic voltage at any point of common coupling1 with a nominal system voltage of less than 66 kV shall not exceed 4 percent for any odd numbered harmonic order, or 2 percent for any even numbered harmonic order, where these percentages are a percentage of the nominal phase-to-earth system voltage.

IEC 61000-3-3, IEC 61000-3-5 and IEC 61000-3-11 (selected according to the rated current of the equipment) contain acceptable solutions to show compliance with Regulation 56 in respect of voltage flicker due to fluctuating loads.

1 Point of common coupling - means that busbar electrically closest to any consumer through which any current must flow to that consumer and one or more other consumers.
